Entrants were given a choice of three titles, the first of which was concerned with their own sphere of life, the second with Finland as their native country and the third with Finland's future prospects. The essays were to be submitted to the Geographical Society under pseudonyms by the end of September 1987. The competition, which was sponsored by Okobank of Finland, attracted a large number of entries, the content of which reflected very well the spirit of the times. The adjudicatory panel appointed by the Geographical Society consisted of Professors Olavi Heikkinen, Kalevi Rikkinen and Pentti Yli‑Jokipii and a student of geography, Miss Hille Koskela.
