Summary:These theses are considered and proven: weapon as a material thing has an artificial nature, which, in turn, has the following main features - the material it is made of, weapon shape, capacity for replication; weapon as a material thing has a utilitarian purpose of creation; weapon as a social tool can be used both for its intended attributive purpose (ability to cause damage - damage to a particular object in a particular way), and for indirect modus purpose (not related to the ability of causing damage). The issue of wording the definition of the concept of “weapon” is analyzed in terms of different branches of law and branch differences in the definition are studied. The classification criteria are determined and specific taxa of the factor “weapon as a material thing” are formed. Synthesis of specific taxa by the criteria of “the ways of impact of weapons on a living being” and “the way of the weapons’ functioning” are considered. Based on the combination of hypotheses about “the artificiality of weapons” and " utilitarian purpose of creating weapons” the definition of the concept of “weapons as a material thing” is formed. Subject to the terms of attributive and modus social purpose of weapons, the definition of “weapons as a social tool’ is formed. A comprehensive definition of the concept of “a weapon” is worded.
