This comprehensive study was performed by means of semi-structured interviews and participant observation of nursing professionals, in the period from February to May of 2011. Thematic analysis was used and the identified categories were: physical body care, which relates technical-scientific knowledge with adequate working and staffing conditions, legally ensured, but not institutionally guaranteed; and social body care, which refers to relational technologies, with emphasis on observation, listening, talking, dialogue and bonding. Results show that the sociocultural perspective values behaviors, beliefs, and meanings as important elements to improve the quality of care.
