Description
Summary:The Brazilian coastal zone is singular by its historical socioeconomic importance and natural richness, where highly polluting activities coexists with valuable environmental resources. In an attempt to add a participative quality in the management politics of this territory, the management plan of federal government named "Projeto Orla" appears as a decentralizing and integrated politic. In this context, the present work aims to contribute as an assessment of this management mechanism considering, as study case, the implementation of "Projeto Orla" in the Balneário Rincão municipality (Santa Catarina’s southern coast, Brazil). Based on participant observation and first source documentation analysis, a group of assumptions was generated, as follows: (1) The community participation in the management process is intrinsic to assure the goal of regional necessities and peculiarities; (2) the integration of management mechanisms is highly important to reduce the territory use and occupancy conflicts; and (3) the environmental education is the main awareness tool to transpose from the actual consumption model to the environmentally sustainable model.
