| Summary: | In this article my contention is that the idea of resurgence plays an essential role in A Glastonbury Romance by John Cowper Powys. Taking the narrative context into account, some of the resurgences at work in the text may correspond to an attempt to reunite what is separated in the modern world, namely the past, the present and the future. Such resurgences, however, are ambiguous : do they end up as sterile repetition or on the contrary as fruitful remembrance likely to open up to the future ? From a thematic point of view the question remains unanswered. Powys, however, may have found a way out of this ambiguity by reactivating the romance. Indeed reactivating the romance means looking back on the past, but it is also at the same time what enables Powys to bring what was potential in the past into the present so as to testify to what is amiss in our modern world. |
