Summary: | One of the most pressing problems in the production of tobacco in the province of Pinar del Río, has been the degree of physical, chemical and biological deterioration of the soils dedicated to the crop. The human activity on the ground constitutes one of its main causes, for that reason several investigations have been made to solve this problem. The objective of the work was to determine the potential of a tobacco cooperative for agroecological transformation. A study was carried out based on the following indicators: economic control, management of pests and diseases, existence and use of water, selection of varieties and species of seeds and indicators of use, management and conservation of soils. Two fundamental techniques were applied: the interview and the survey of 32 landowners. The results obtained indicate that producers are not motivated and identified with the need to change the traditional farming system to agroecological or soil conservation systems; expressed in a low motivation due to ignorance and application of techniques and measures, limiting the transformation of traditional farming systems to agroecological or soil conservation systems, on the other hand there is a clear identification of the producers with the policies of the state conservation and improvement of soils.
