Description
Summary:This article explores the history of landscaping in northeastern Brazil, undertaking a case study of the public gardens projected or constructed in the coastal cities of Recife, Fortaleza, and Joao Pessoa in the 19th and 20th centuries. The corresponding lexicon is adopted as the main category of analysis here, since it includes different designations for the places mentioned, which in turn — by including both their official and their popular names — are related to the functional and morphological attributes, the surrounding buildings, and the recurrence of political events crystalized in urban toponymy. Hence, it presents an original approach, which is expected to generate new interpretations regarding the history of Brazilian landscaping.
