Description
Summary:A task control list based on the tasks allocated to ancillary services and staff was compiled. The task control list indicates the non-nursing tasks which were identified for this study. According to the task control list the non-nursing tasks performed by the registered nurse were identified and the extent determined. All the tasks on the task control list were performed by some of the 196 respondents. According to the respondents they spent 100,8% of their work time per week on non-nursing duties. During an average of 9 hours observations per respondent it was found that she spent 46,3% of the time on non-nursing tasks. Because of this R 1 158297 of the budget on nursing is paid per year to the response group (N — 196) to do the work of the ancillary services and staff. These figures are disturbing and a definite attempt should be made to relieve the registered nurse of performing non-nursing tasks and to get her involved in direct patient care again.
