Since 2005 the term cohousing has become part of the Italian debate on non-conventional dwelling initiatives. What types of initiative does the term cover? And why is it used in Italy? Can this phenomenon be compared with alternative living environments that have emerged and are emerging in France and elsewhere?The aim of this article is to examine the specificity of the emergence and development of cohousing in Italy, by identifying which aspects are in keeping with tradition and which are “innovative”. In order to fully understand this phenomenon, it is necessary to identify the actors involved and their motivations, as well as the debates that have contributed to the movement’s rise.
