Summary: | Cultivating a reading culture is important to any individual and to the development of any nation. Collaboration between parents, school staff and librarians, as well as early literary initiation is necessary for the effective development of a reading culture. A special role is played by librarians, who can enhance the process of literary initiation with properly selected projects for young readers. This article describes the current state of research on the reading culture (with the emphasis on reading competencies), focusing especially on possible directions and methods of its effective development. The article draws attention to the importance of books in children’s development, presents the role of a library in literary initiation, and focuses on projects and activities for young readers.
