Description
Summary:his article deals with an aspect of modern polemics against onomatodoxy. The paperanalyses the statement of onomatodoxy supporters that if an Orthodox icon is sanctified by theinscription of the corresponding name, then, this name turns out to be Divine energy. Thearticle attempts to refute such a statement by turning to the heritage of the CappadocianFathers, St. John Damascene, St. Gregory Palamas and other Church Fathers. The authoremphasizes that the icon is sanctified not only by the inscription of the name but also throughthe picture of prosopon –hypostasis of the saint, which points to the insufficiency of the nameinscription alone. Moreover, the article states is that the names (the Divine one as well) are,by no means, energy by themselves. Instead, they derive from human ἐπίνοια, and yet, at thesame time, they can be filled with the presence of divine energies by virtue of a free divine gift.
