Description
Summary:<p>Predicting the maximum intensity of geomagnetic activity for an upcoming solar cycle is important in space weather service and for planning future space missions. This study analyzed the highest and lowest 3-hourly <span class="inline-formula"><i>a</i><i>a</i></span> index (<span class="inline-formula"><i>a</i><i>a</i><sub>H</sub>∕<i>a</i><i>a</i><sub>L</sub></span>) in a 3 d interval, smoothed by 363 d to analyze their variation with the 11-year solar cycle. It is found that the maximum of <span class="inline-formula"><i>a</i><i>a</i><sub>H</sub></span> (<span class="inline-formula"><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M6" display="inline" overflow="scroll" dspmath="mathml"><mrow><mi>a</mi><msub><mi>a</mi><mrow class="chem"><msub><mi mathvariant="normal">H</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">max</mi></msub></mrow></msub></mrow></math><span><svg:svg xmlns:svg="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="32pt" height="12pt" class="svg-formula" dspmath="mathimg" md5hash="e4bab275520ea3f63927603c5ed18c4a"><svg:image xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="angeo-38-1237-2020-ie00001.svg" width="32pt" height="12pt" src="angeo-38-1237-2020-ie00001.png"/></svg:svg></span></span>) is well correlated with the preceding minimum of either <span class="inline-formula"><i>a</i><i>a</i><sub>H</sub></span> (<span class="inline-formula"><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M8" display="inline" overflow="scroll" dspmath="mathml"><mrow><mi>a</mi><msub><mi>a</mi><mrow class="chem"><msub><mi mathvariant="normal">H</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">min</mi></msub></mrow></msub></mrow></math><span><svg:svg xmlns:svg="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="30pt" height="12pt" class="svg-formula" dspmath="mathimg" md5hash="ccd24d12f306e83ebeafabab51d03aaf"><svg:image xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="angeo-38-1237-2020-ie00002.svg" width="30pt" height="12pt" src="angeo-38-1237-2020-ie00002.png"/></svg:svg></span></span>, <span class="inline-formula"><i>r</i>=0.85</span>) or <span class="inline-formula"><i>a</i><i>a</i><sub>L</sub></span> (<span class="inline-formula"><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M11" display="inline" overflow="scroll" dspmath="mathml"><mrow><mi>a</mi><msub><mi>a</mi><mrow class="chem"><msub><mi mathvariant="normal">L</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">min</mi></msub></mrow></msub></mrow></math><span><svg:svg xmlns:svg="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="29pt" height="12pt" class="svg-formula" dspmath="mathimg" md5hash="d6d4c4b79e0e68f778692d4e761ff5a1"><svg:image xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="angeo-38-1237-2020-ie00003.svg" width="29pt" height="12pt" src="angeo-38-1237-2020-ie00003.png"/></svg:svg></span></span>, <span class="inline-formula"><i>r</i>=0.89</span>) for the solar cycle.
