Summary: | This essay aims to show how the notion of plasticityarticulates the Husserlian manner of engaging the problematic of givenness. For this purpose, it interprets the transition from static to genetic phenomenology as a progression from the analysis of the wakeful cogito to its awakening; it further shows how this methodological reorientation binds the question of givenness to that of the origins of the cogito. The presentation has four parts, which respectively deal with (1) the problem of givenness in Husserl and Marion; (2) the relation between appearance and emergence of consciousness in Husserl; (3) the wakeful cogito as expressive of static methodology; (4) the awakening of the cogito as supplementing the static account with lateral and vertical dimensions of givenness. |
