Description
Summary:With reference to the literature of the subject an attempt is undertaken to determine the conditions of naivety and grotesque as two aesthetic qualities. The provisional list of aesthetically valuable qualities, proposed by R. Ingarden, is quoted with the aim to find in it the place for naivety. The same concerns also the grotesque. It is remarked that naive paintings (the paper is limited to painting) are often characterised by staticality, fancifulness, fabulousness and preference of saturated colours. Some examples of naive paintings are described, divided into groups, depending on their character. After W. Kayser, the etymology of the word grotesque is given and the opinion of T. Gryglewicz quoted. According to the latter, the grotesque appears either by hybridization (connection of human elements with the animal, vegetable or other ones) or by the deformation of shapes. It is remarked that grotesque has always an implicit reference to reality; this reference may be also mediated by previous works (previous works may also mediate this reference). It is stated that grotesque shocks by oddity, eccentricity and fancifulness. Finally some examples are quoted, divided into appropriate groups.
