| Summary: | The access to the information and the control of its diffusion were, from the beginning of the Peninsular War, a priority and it was clear that the war would become that of the pen as well. Therefore, the press, witness and actor of the conflict, obtained a new dimension. Liberated from its fetters (at least in patriot Spain), the press discovered the liberty, it entered into politics with passion and it became diversified. Thereupon the first military newspapers appeared. Among them the Periódico militar del Estado Mayor General (1812). Its analysis will allow us to determine the specificity of that type of newspapers and how the military men perceived the practice of journalism.Readers will find in the appendix an edition of this weekly newspaper whose only complete collection found at the moment is stored at the Biblioteca de la Fundación Federico Joly Höhr (Cadiz, Spain).
