Summary: | Abstract The German Empire celebrates its 150th birthday in 2021. The founding of the Empire coincided with the second phase of industrialisation, which began in the second half of the 19th century and increasingly accelerated. On the occasion of this year’s anniversary, the authors explore important economic and political developments of the time. They focus on institutional achievements, the first period of globalisation, the effects of investments in public infrastructure such as railway construction and education, as well as social security and its influence on demographic change. This economic-historical analysis not only provides new insights into the German Empire, but also offers lessons for the present day. |
