We have learnt a lot about the pathophysiology and natural history of the disease. New effective classes of drugs with the associated potential morbidity have been introduced. New surgical techniques have been popularized leading to a better understanding of the optimal timing of surgery. The result is a very complex subspecialty of gastroenterology and colorectal surgery called the "IBDologist."
