Summary: | « La Terreur future », by Marcel Schwob, and Le Conte futur, by Paul Adam, both written at the beginning of the last decade of the nineteenth century, reflect the turbulent climate of those years by presenting conflicts that could happen in a rather vague future. While taking into account the differences between the two texts, our analysis focuses on the similarities in the presentation of these conflicts. It seems, in particular, that the founding principle of the Double Heart is applied in both Schwob’s and Adam’s tales ; but this passage from terror to pity only partially follows the same path. Can we nevertheless conclude that the two texts are optimistic ? That is also the question this study means to answer. |
