Description
Summary:Taking the intersection between Iberian Studies and Translation Studies as a point of departure, this paper discusses the relation between the Catalan and the Portuguese literary systems through literary translation. It particularly focuses on the translation of novels written in Catalan into European Portuguese in the twenty-first century. The purpose is twofold: on the one hand, our analysis seeks to emphasize the rhizomatic nature of the Iberian space, as proposed by the paradigm of Iberian Studies; on the other, it points out the potential of intersecting two expanding disciplines. After a brief corpus description and analysis, the paper centers around the intermediated role played by Spanish. The special focus on indirect translation allows us to conclude that the cultural transfer process has a negative impact in this context, as it may imply the invisibility of the minoritized language and cultural system.
