Description
Summary:On the basis of historical and linguistic data, this article demonstrates that the Ayacucho Quechua dialect developed in the Incaic period and is the result of the assimilation of Cuzco Quechua by speakers of different languages and, in particular, by those who spoke dialects of Quechua that differed greatly from the Quechua spoken in Ayacucho today. This process was the result of the Incaic establishment of a vast multiethnic and state-controlled region in the Huarpa and Pampas river valleys. In colonial times this new variety of Quechua spread out in the region articulated around the Huamanga-Huancavelica axis and acquired the geographical contours that characterize it today.
