Description
Summary:19th century was a highly turbulent period both for the entire Ottoman Empire in general and Aintab province in particular. However, it is observed that public order was normal in Aintab province during the period named as Tanzimat (Reorganization of the Ottoman Empire) period (1839-76). This situation can be understood from the records of the Shari’i Court (1839-1876). The events and cases we found in the court records we examined in general are as follows; “Adoption of children and appointment of guardian or custodian” in terms of protective family unions; “theft, drinking wine and drunkenness, slander of adultery, and highway robbery in terms of crimes committed against public morality”; and ordinary crimes such as “murder and wounding” in terms of crimes committed against individuals.
