CULTURAL FILTERS AND SHIFT IN FOCUS IN THE WTC TERRORIST ATTACKS

This article presents the translation-journalism interface trough the theory of translation as a cultural representation (ZIPSER, 2002). Within this view the journalist is understood as a translator of facts which highlights shifts in focus in the journalistic textual production, especially when news move through distinct cultural contexts. This is illustrated by parallel texts about the terrorist attacks in the USA in 2001 which were reported by TIME and Veja magazines at the time. Based on the nordian functionalist approach to translation studies, this article derives from a dissertation research recently defended and it is articulated into three distinct moments: i) the contextualization of the referred interface; ii) the theories of Nord (1991-transdlation) and Esser (1998- journalism) and iii) the analysis of the magazine covers and cultural filters used by the journalist-translator, pointing out journalism as an organizer of social profiles and the effect of culture over the translation of news reports.
