Almost all of his work, both artistic and journalistic, were imbued with Apocalyptic mood. Being an Orthodox, Gogol built his life in accordance to the church calendar which includes the annual charter of holidays and worship when the cycle of readings of the Gospel is repeated for the teachings of spiritual growth of a man.
