Summary:This paper examines the objectives and explanations admitted to the conquest of Cayenne by troops from Pará, using english naval support, in january 1809. We have at least three options, more or less credible: a retaliation to the french, probably the only possible; a wider geopolitical goal, how to incorporate French Guiana and make it a stronghold for the portuguese presence in the noth of South America and Caribbean; and a narrower geopolitical goal, secure Oiapoque’s border by, securing a broad territory north of Macapá, thereby increasing the safety conditions of the Amazon’s moutn and estuary.
