| Summary: | Travel is well-established nowadays in Japan, as a form of enjoyment. In ancient Japan, however, the movement of people was largely for the paying of taxes in the capital, the comings and goings of messengers and, amongst others, the back and forth of provincial governors between their posts and the capital. Travel, as a form of enjoyment, developed mainly in the Edo Period. I will use travel literature to analyze how Japanese perceptions of travel have changed, and to show how those records provided the basis for considering travel as a pastime in early modern Japan. |
