Description
Summary:The man with no name lives in a rock cavity somewhere in the Hebei countryside north of Beijing. He lives alone, in autarky, in this deserted region. This man who does not say his name does not communicate any more, even in front of the camera of Wang Bing who films his gestures, his movements, his activities. The man with no name has let go of language just as he has let go of all social belonging and embeddedness. The strange singularity of his silence and loneliness surprises the spectator, just like it surprised Wang Bing; it shows the possibility of a new form of life, of which I suggest an anthropological interpretation, through the notions of indifference and contact, interrogating the radical choice of abandoning communication and consequently the system of relations linked to it, an abandonment that renders possible the emergence of another world, which I try to outline.
