Description
Summary:Although Turkish has gone through a radical language reform relatively recently, the change in punctuation and spelling of Turkish is still in progress. New editions of spelling dictionaries have introduced new rules to eliminate inconsistencies in spelling and punctuation, but each change seems to trigger new discussions. Thus, an extensive literature on the spelling of Turkish appeared which deals with the subject usually from a critical perspective. One of the most problematic areas in the spelling of Turkish is the use of the circumflex. This study aims for a diachronic analysis of the use of circumflex in the media and it addresses the possibility of a spelling reform. A quantitative analysis of the use of circumflex in journals, newspapers and books was carried out, taking into consideration publishers’ adherence to spelling rules through three-decade periods: 1950, 1980 and 2010. The findings were evaluated with respect to reasons and solutions, and the problem is reevaluated from the point of view of language planning.
