 The Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept according to which the identifiable objects may directly or indirectly collect, process and exchange data through the computer network. The usage of IoT in the management process becomes a prerequisite for the development of businesses, retaining a competitive advantage in the market. The aim of the study is to present Internet of things as an innovation which raises companies economic efficiency and to outline the prospects for its development. In 2014, Internet of things consisted of nearly 2 billion devices, and in 2018 there may even 9 billion. This results in a continuous growth of Internet networks in enterprises and an implementation of new technologies, which improve management systems. It is estimated that until 2018 the main drivers for the development of the IoT in Poland, will be retail and consumer industry. Integration of systems used in these enterprises should result in achieving a high economic efficiency.
