Summary: | The Republic of Moldova is today tributary to its totalitarian past (1944–1991), during which has been built a planned economy, oriented towards satisfying the needs of a gigantic military-industrial complex. Important sectors, including environment protection and public health, have been completely neglected during many decades. Thus, the consequences of public authorities’ chronical lack of vision, are reflected in the functioning of the waste
management sector.
In this article, after a short presentation of legal and institutional difficulties in the field of waste management, we point out several advantages resulting from the adoption of a new Waste Management Law. In compliance with the Republic of Moldova’s obligations according to the Association Agreement with the European Union, the new Waste Management Law will attract important private investment in the sector, introduce the extended producers’ responsibility mechanism, and allow for a correct and efficient management of hazardous waste. The adoption of a new Waste Management Law is the first and the most important step in the process of implementation of an Integrated Waste Management System.
