A space, in addition to its unique geographical identity, is always at the same time a cultural and symbolic construction. Therefore, thanks to all those who inhabit it or circulate through it, a space reveals itself at every moment both as a product and as a producer of identity. Taking this idea as a guiding principle and starting from the analysis of two major examples –the pilgrimages of Isabel, Queen and Saint, in 1325, and of King Manuel I, in 1502–, the text proposed here intends to reflect critically on the possibility of an identity-definition for late-medieval Portuguese paths to Santiago of Compostela as a privileged aspect of peregrinatio per Christi.
