Summary: | The article deals with the role of sociocultural activity of libraries in society at the beginning of the 21 st century. As it evolves, transforms, and adapts, the library remains a cultural-civilization phenomenon with the functions of a public institute with universal competence that includes all the achievements of culture and civilization. The activity of libraries as a modern center of socio-cultural communications is considered, directions and approaches in the mentioned field are highlighted. A detailed analysis of the coverage of this problem by various experts is given. The author considers library as a social institution that fulfills important functions in modern life, actively using new modern technologies. The forms of work which library practice with users are diverse: an exhibition (books, paintings), thematic meetings (on the occasion of an anniversary or a meeting with prominent personalities), joint activities with museums, archives, publishers, embassies, etc. Today, in the activities of Ukrainian libraries, there are more than 200 forms of organizing cultural activities, among them mass educational events are significant part. All library socio-cultural activities should take into account a number of factors: current trends in education, culture, art, fashion, age and psychological characteristics of readers, gender approach, and the experience of library staff.
