Summary:This research aimsed to develop the engineering design process on STEM education approach and study the scientific literacy in light and visual instrument topic of 11th grade students. The research was the classroom action research. The participants were 11th grade students 49 students. They were selected by purposive sampling. Research instruments comprised the learning observation form, student learn record form, worksheet and scientific literacy test. The data were analyzed by using qualitative data analysis and quantitative data analysis, which were content analysis, mean, percentage and standard deviation. The results showed that the engineering design process on STEM education approach by following Identify a challenge step, students need to consider the problem and identify the problem. Teacher should use questions to encourage students for practice scientific thinking in identifying problems. Explore ideas step, students need to consider all ideas or knowledges that can be used to solve problems and write down. Plan and develop step, students need to apply scientific knowledge for the operational plan, and determine the problem-solving process or procedure for creating a work piece to solve the problem. Test and evaluate step, students need to test and evaluate work piece for solve problems by themselves. The results of the tests and evaluations may be used to improve and develop the work piece to more effectively solve the problem. Present the solution step, students need to present their work piece to teacher and students. Presentation should be simplified to understand and interesting. Teacher must summarize the activities and knowledge for students. Engineering design process on STEM education approach found that the students developed the scientific literacy, the evaluate and design scientific enquiry competency is the most developed (71.83), the interpret data and evidence scientifically competency (66.67) and explain phenomena scientifically competency (56.99) has developed respectively.
