Summary: | Schelling presumed that the solution of a dichotomy, philosophy versus poetry, could take place through a synthesis of the language of philosophy and the language of poetry: the reason and sensibility, refl ection and fantasy. Th is synthesis was supposed to be embodied in new mythology, expressed in German philosophy and literary culture. Th is new mythology was an expression of reason and emotion, the essence of historical powers. A philosopher, unveiling historical necessities and regularities, discovered an absolute, giving to human actions a meaning of freedom. In consequence a man obtains self-knowledge of his freedom. In new mythology spontaneity and sensitivity go in concert with reason. Th e Latin poems of Schelling predict a transformation from the allegorical interpretation of the myth to the realistic, and in consequence a new mythology is created. It precedes the development of his concepts presented in the Philosophy of Art. |
