Description
Summary:This paper analyzes the construction of the notion of barbarity and its uses by the anarchist movement in the city of Buenos Aires in 1910. From the analysis of the newspaper La Batalla (The Battle), published between March and May, it was possible to identify uses and conceptualizations of barbarism. At a time of great political turmoil in the country and, with the proximity of the Centennial celebrations, the newspaper officiates as an identity amalgam for the movement towards the realization of a general strike that aims to topple the Conservative government. In this publication two universes of meanings that construct the identity of the barbarians. Simultaneously, by contrast, delineate the identity of the libertarian movement itself can be distinguished: on the one hand, (1) the barbarity linked to the local: the pampa, the Indians, animals, desert; on the other hand, (2) the barbarity linked to the foreign, against the nationalist advanced. Thus, the paper constructs two opposite places of barbarism and civilization, in key: local-foreign, Argentine-Europe, city-rural area, a polarized world of senses.
