Description
Summary:The object of this study is none other than to resolve the problems concerning the ancient door of Montserrat, with emphasis on the chronology and its original site, as well as the stylistic links of the sculpture. The work also analyzes the importance of the door of Montserrat in the development of the image of the “Virgin door” in Romanesque Catalan sculpture. In any case, it would appear that the building of the door can be related to the rise in pilgrimages to Montserrat. In time the sanctuary began, together with Santiago and Rome, to be the beneficiary of Catalan pilgrims’ legacies, acquiring very soon the status as the regional centre of pilgrimage and the condition of a stage on the Jacobean route
