The research objects and sources were the plays <em>A Capital Federal</em> and <em>Guanabarina</em>, written by Arthur Azevedo. In the last decades of the 19th century the city was taken by a modernizing wave that included not only the public spaces, but also the population’s sociability and cultural expressions. The analyses introduced here are derived from the master’s research entitled <em>"The Arthur Azevedo’s Rio de Janeiro.
