Description
Summary:This study brings to public attention a short vocabulary of Zamboanga Chabacano: a list of 188 word which the Spanish compiler did not understand, produced in the 1880s. Despite its brevity and the fact that it is limited to words from autochthonous languages, it is nonetheless a document of great interest which deserves to be made known, not only because it is about a hundred years older than the first published vocabularies, but also because it sheds light on the stratigraphy of the Philippine lexicon in Chabacano and leads us to revisit the dominant ideas about it. This work consists of an initial study and two appendixes. The initial study deals with all that refers to the two manuscripts containing the list, their author and date, as well as the origin interpretation and current status of the words; the study ends with a summary of the results. Two appendixes follow: the first one reproduces the original manuscript; the second one contains the vocabulary, profusely annotated according to a template applied to all words.
