The project Rescuing the oral tradition (myths and legends) of the montubio peasants who reside in the rural areas of the canton of Milagro in order to strengthen the identity of the youth, is cross-curricular, qualitative and ethnographic. The standpoint of the other has taken precedence as a source of knowledge during its development. One of the new trends in the research and management of cultural heritage which the Milagro State University has undertaken aims to rescue the oral tradition of the montubio peasant, using characterization and dissemination to strengthen youth identity. Young people struggle to come to terms with their own identity: this is caused in the main part by the fact that Ecuadorian society is immersed in the phenomenon of globalization and hence share signs codes conceived by the global imagination. Furthermore the urban and rural education system does not act to promote and encourage respect for and appreciation of the cultural reality in which children and young people are involved. It is therefore essential to disseminate local culture; achieving greater knowledge, respect and empowerment would entail a rethinking of the patterns of behavior and ways of life commensurate withthe urban dweller, especially amongst the youth.
