Summary:The purpose of this article is to present the evolution of social control by computer technology, more often called digital technology, today. There has been an increasing concern for data protection over the past fifty years. Four areas of concern are: uses of personal information such as date of birth, account passwords, etc.; comprehensive global surveillance; self-presentation and the mediatisation of private information; and reclaiming anonymity and the protection of personal data. The main theme of this article is that the emergence of a new theme which does not replace older ones.
