Description
Summary:Yearly cultivated surfaces required for self-sufficiency of a refugees family in northeastern Zaire. Based on official tables, it has been possible to calculate a diet composed of local foods and adequate for the average family of 5 people requiring 9 500 Kcal per day. Such a family has to cultivate 45, 5 ares in cereal, 40 ares in legumes, 30 ares in cassata, 18, 5 ares in oleiferous plants and 2 ares in vegetables to produce the 858 Kg required annually for self-sufficiency. The money obtained from the sale of 34 supplementary ares planted in sesame alows the producer to purchase the 78 Kg meat, salt and oil needed to complement the annual diet up to 936 Kg.
