Summary: | In the 1980s the maracatus of Recife went through a transition, emerging from a period of decline that had set in during the 1960s and entering one of rejuvenation as the result of renewed interest in popular culture. This triggered the creation of new strategies by some maracatu musicians, including Luiz de França, from the Maracatu Leao Coroado, Maria Madalena, from Nação Elefante and Elda, from the Porto Rico do Pina, as they searched to find their space in society. As "traditional" groups underwent the impact (and influence) of samba schools, these maracatu leaders continue their search for social recognition within the urban cultural context of the capital of Pernambuco. |
