Summary: | In XVII-th century France, literature, and more precisely, the drama genre, is subjected to the vision of greatness of “l’État-modèle”, becoming a means of inculcating of the majesty of the reign of Louis XIII and later on of Louis XIV, as conceived, at its beginnings, by the bishop of Richelieu. One of the means playwrights will resort to in order to convey a feeling of majesty is by resorting to the imitation of the works of the ancient writers. Mythology, Greek and Roman history will become the two seams mined by writers such as Racine or Corneille. The literary universe of the time is a highly intertextual one. Under the circumstances, the peritext plays an important part in the economy of the literary work, the reading of the playwrights’ prefaces enlightening the comprehension both of the plays, at an individual level, and of the classicism doctrine, as a whole.
This article analyses the way in which the discourse of one of the Racinian prefaces (written after the performance of the plays on stage) unfolds to the reader. In doing that, we shall examine the extent to which the intertextual elements are taken as reference points by the author, revealing his artistic creed in his attempt to defend his tragedies against their detractors.
