COMBINING ABILITY OF PARTIAL INBRED PROGENY FROM COMMERCIAL CORN HYBRIDS

This work was carried out with the objective of both assessing the performance of single cross hybrids from partial maize inbred lines and evaluating if synthetic derived from commercial hybrids differ in their extraction potential for better inbred lines. Twenty S2 families of each synthetic derive...

Twenty S2 families of each synthetic derived from the hybrids AG9012, C333B and Z8392 were sampled. The crosses were carried out by using a circulant diallel plan in which s was equal to three. All the 90 S2 x S2 hybrids plus ten checks were evaluated in Lavras-MG and Rio Verde-GO, using a three replicated lattice design (10x10).Plant and ear height, percentage of healthy ears, and unhusked ears yield were measured. The collected data were submitted to individual and combined analyses of variance. Both the individual and the combined analyses were performed with adjusted means to obtain the general (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA). The GCA mean square was responsible for 75% of the total variation. The synthetics derived from the hybrids showed different performances for extracting inbred lines. Progenies derived from C333B had the largest GCA. S2 x S2 hybrids with equal or better performance than the checks could be identified.http://rbms.cnpms.embrapa.br/index.php/ojs/article/view/120/120Zea mays L.: quantitative genetics: hybridcirculant diallel: progeny S2
