Summary: | Until the early 1970s, criminal law in Arab countries, with the ex- ception of Saudi Arabia, had been developed according to legal principles and frameworks imported from Western countries. However, during the last quar- ter of the 20th century, a number of Arab countries made a radical break from this convention, incorporating into their legal systems a number of Shari ́a- recognized elements of criminal law, such as Hudud crimes. The implementa- tion of these elements in a legal and contemporary political context has created novel conditions and legal conflicts. |
