Summary: | The military "intervention" and purges at the Universidad de Chile in the early years of the Pinochet regime (1973-1976) reflect the radical institutional, economic and cultural transformations imposed under military rule thoughout the country, in order to install a neoliberal economic system. In addition to the use of force and political repression, the dictatorship used the university to construct an ideological discourse to legitimize its actions. This article examines the end of university autonomy under Pinochet, the expulsion of, and threats made against, academics, staff and students, and the intervention's profound impact on the concept of university. |
