Summary:In this paper, I am going to explain the evolution of the debate on religious symbols in schools in France, which has moved from tolerance to rejection, and the recent approval of the law to prohibit religious manifestations in schools. In both the initial government declarations, permitting the use of the Islamic veil, as well as in the Stasi Commission report, the line of argument is based on the laicism of the institutions. So why has this change in attitude towards cultural rights occurred?
