The paper discusses the role and functions of the UDF, mainly teaching, researching, promoting and fostering culture, as well as preparing professionals and technicians of several fields, including teachers of all levels. It highlights the contributions by foreign and Brazilian academic staff in teaching and researching, discussing problems faced by that university and reasons for its extinction, in January 1939.
