Summary: | The study discusses the origins and the creation of the Universidade do Distrito Federal (UDF) in 1935, conceived by Anísio Teixeira. It contextualizes the process in the 30s, raising questions related to education. The paper discusses the role and functions of the UDF, mainly teaching, researching, promoting and fostering culture, as well as preparing professionals and technicians of several fields, including teachers of all levels. It highlights the contributions by foreign and Brazilian academic staff in teaching and researching, discussing problems faced by that university and reasons for its extinction, in January 1939. It concludes pointing that even now the UDF still offers relevant contributions to thinking about university in Brazil.
