Summary:Purpose. To study a prevalence and reasons of blindness and visual impairment in a random sample of population aged 50 and more in Samara.Material and methods. There was covered in the article 95% of population clustered sample of 4044 persons 50+ with door-to-door exam. Visual acuity and eye condition were studied comprehensively according to the RAAB protocol. Data was processed with the standard RAAB software.Results. Data on prevalence of blindness due to cataract, as well as a structure of reasons of blindness and visual impairment was obtained. Thus, 75% of blindness and 88% of visual impairment are avoidable.Conclusion. Cataract is a single main cause of blindness. The number of the cases of non operated cataract exceeds the already operated cases 2-2.5 times. Gender differences in prevalence of blindness due to cataract were observed.
