| Summary: | The Tempest is commonly referred to as “the most utopian” play by Shakespeare. In spite of that, the description of its utopian nature has not been grounded on fundamental concepts defined within the field of Utopian Studies. In this essay, I set myself to examine the play at the light of the concept of “utopian mode” put forward by Krishan Kumar, in order to conclude that although The Tempest cannot be formally considered a utopian text, the presence of Thomas More’s Utopia can be felt in the space of its references, i.e. in the space of intertextuality. |
